Scientists from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) gathered at the Sala do Futuro of the Faculdade de Medicina da USP (FM-USP) on Friday, December 12, 2025, for the 1+1=3 Precision Oncology Symposium. The event was dedicated to discussing scientific advances, fostering member integration, and planning the strategic activities of the Comprehensive Center for Precision Oncology (C2PO).

The opening session was led by Prof. Roger Chammas (FM-USP), Coordinator of the C2PO. He emphasized the center’s vocation as an articulator of research within USP and highlighted the importance of integrating different research fronts developed across the university. Participants then took part in a round of individual presentations, showcasing the wide range of scientific interests and competencies present at USP and encouraging the recognition of expertise and opportunities for collaboration.

During the morning, a series of lectures addressed key topics in oncology research at the university. Prof. Cristina Kurachi (IFSC-USP) spoke about the development of photonic technologies applied to oncology. Prof. Guilherme Andrade Marson (IQ-USP) discussed the challenges of addressing misinformation about cancer. Prof. Carlos Alberto Labate (ESALQ-USP) presented opportunities for omics sciences in clinical practice, highlighting technologies of interest to the community. Prof. Leandro Machado Colli (FMRP-USP), Vice-Coordinator of the center, presented the methodologies, advances, and impacts of the Genoma SUS project on the understanding of Brazilian population genomics. Finally, Prof. Maria Lucia Zaidan Dagli (FMVZ-USP) concluded the session by addressing comparative oncology and the importance of animals as research models and as sentinels of environmental contamination.

The morning program also included the collective creation of a panel that enabled the identification of shared interests among members of the C2PO Community.

In the afternoon, the symposium focused on planning for the 2026–2027 biennium. Through a scientific ideation workshop using design thinking tools, participants were divided into five groups and engaged in discussions supported by facilitators, addressing five themes: scientific problems of interest to the C2PO, training of new researchers, incorporation of new technologies, strategies for engagement with companies, and the integration of artificial intelligence into research.

Discussions on scientific problems were facilitated by Prof. Leandro Machado Colli and Prof. Maria Del Pilar Estevez Diz. Training of new researchers involved faculty members from the C2PO Education and Communication Group: Prof. Agnaldo Arroio, Prof. Fábio Siviero, and Prof. Guilherme Andrade Marson. Technology-related discussions were led by Prof. Carlos Alberto Labate. Conversations on artificial intelligence included contributions from Dr. Felipe Franco, Dr. Marcela Quaresma Soares, and Dr. Mina Cintho Ozahata, all from the Laboratory of Big Data and Predictive Health Analytics (LABDAPS), Faculdade de Saúde Pública da USP (FSP-USP).

The event concluded with the consolidation of key ideas and action points, reinforcing the C2PO’s commitment to the collaborative development of precision oncology initiatives and to the democratic governance of the center.
