In the first semester of 2024, the first class of the course We Need to Talk About Cancer: Interdisciplinary Projects to Combat Misinformation and Prejudices (Precisamos Falar de Câncer: Projetos Interdisciplinares de Combate à Desinformação e Preconceitos) began.
The course leverages the C2PO network of knowledge to provide undergraduate students with information on cancer, scientific communication, and combating misinformation. It is offered by the Office of Undergraduate Studies (Pró-Reitoria de Graduação – PRG) as an elective course, conducted virtually with synchronous meetings via videoconference.
The teaching methodology is project-based, involving the creation of informative content by the students themselves, which may include journalistic texts, videos, and informative posts. The course is open to undergraduates from different units of the University of São Paulo and received applications from various programs such as Educommunication, Biomedicine, Psychology, Law, and Engineering.
Professor Fábio Siviero from Instituto de Biociências/IB (Institute of Biosciences) is the course coordinator, and Guilherme Andrade Marson from Instituto de Química/IQ (Institute of Chemistry) is the vice-coordinator.
The initiative also brings together other professors from different units of the University with various specialties: Agnaldo Arroio, Professor at Faculdade de Educação/FE (School of Education); André Chaves de Melo Silva and Claudemir Edson Viana, Professors at Escola de Comunicação e Artes/ECA (School of Communications and Arts); Fernando Abdulkader, from Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas – ICB (Institute of Biomedical Sciences); Mariana Kiomy Osako, Professor at Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto – FMRP (Ribeirão Preto Medical School); and Roger Chammas, from Faculdade de Medicina/FM (Medical School).
