Agreements signed by CAPES allowing the publication of open-access scientific articles without article processing charges (APCs) came into force on January 1.
The contracts involve the publishers ACM, Elsevier, and Springer Nature and benefit researchers affiliated with Brazilian institutions that are part of the CAPES Journals Portal. In the case of ACM, the model was already in place; for Elsevier and Springer Nature, the agreements officially took effect at the beginning of this year.
The measure removes one of the main financial barriers to scientific publishing and is expected to increase the international visibility of Brazilian research, while also strengthening the country’s open science policy.
