The Center for Translational Research in Oncology (CTO) at the Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo (ICESP) is accepting applications for the 2025 Theoretical and Practical Course on Extracellular Vesicles, which will take place from September 15 to 19, 2025.
The course will be conducted in English at the CTO, a research center with several integrated laboratories that is a reference in oncology research in Brazil and Latin America. Throughout the program, participants will receive theoretical lectures and practical training on the different phases of research involving extracellular vesicles in the context of tumor development. The content will cover the sources of these vesicles, extraction methods from conditioned media, and analysis of their content from a systems biology perspective. By the end of the activities, students will be able to understand how the messages carried by these vesicles (e.g., via miRNAs) can influence recipient cells, including tumor cells and cells from the tumor microenvironment.
CTO researchers will deliver the theoretical lectures and practical training. Among them are Prof. Dr. Roger Chammas and Dr. Luciana Nogueira de Sousa Andrade, who lead the course, as well as Dr. Alexis Germán Murillo Carrasco, Dr. Andreia Hanada Otake, and Dr. Silvina Odete Bustos. Additionally, training sessions will be provided by Dr. Adriana Paes Leme from the National Biosciences Laboratory at the Center for Research in Energy and Materials (LNBio-CNPEM), Dr. Virginia Novaro from the Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (IBYME-CONICET), and Prof. Juan Pablo Tosar from the Universidad de la República and the Pasteur Institute of Montevideo.
The full program is now available.
The course was selected in the Call for Support for Short Courses in Biotechnology, promoted by the Latin American Center for Biotechnology (CABBIO), a regional technical-scientific integration program of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) in partnership with state agencies from Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia. In addition to supporting Brazilian students, the funding will enable the participation of students from other South American countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
A total of 16 slots are available, distributed as follows: 6 slots for Brazil; 4 slots for Argentina; 2 slots for Uruguay; 2 slots for Colombia; 1 slot for Paraguay; 1 slot for Peru.
Applications for the selection process are open until June 15, 2025. Interested graduate students must apply through the link corresponding to their country of origin and include a letter of recommendation. See the links below and look for Course BR14:
