Frontiers in Genetics and Frontiers in Oncology open call for Topic on Tumor Heterogeneity

The journals Frontiers in Genetics and Frontiers in Oncology have announced a call for the new topic “Deciphering molecular mechanisms behind tumor heterogeneity features by using nucleic acid-based technologies.”

The deadline for abstract submissions is April 5, while the final deadline for full manuscript submissions is September 15, 2025. Accepted formats include scientific articles, reviews, meta-analyses, perspectives, and opinion pieces. The topic’s scope includes single-cell and bulk analyses targeting genetic and epigenetic diversity; innovative bioinformatics frameworks to identify unique markers; new methods for detecting biomarkers of tumor subpopulations; and nucleic acid therapies targeting heterogeneous tumor cells.

Dr. Alexis Germán Murillo Carrasco, a researcher at the Center for Translational Research in Oncology (CTO) at the Cancer Institute of São Paulo State (ICESP), explains the importance of the new topic: “Cancer cells exhibit complex genetic and epigenetic alterations, resulting in tumor heterogeneity that impacts precision medicine and treatment resistance. Thanks to cutting-edge nucleic acid-based technologies — such as liquid biopsies, single-cell sequencing, and spatial profiling — we can delve deeper into these intricate molecular landscapes. These approaches pave the way for identifying innovative biomarkers and therapeutic strategies that can re-sensitize resistant tumor cells.”

The Topic Editors are Dr. Tatiane Katsue Furuya (ICESP), Dr. Mateus Aoki (Carlos Chagas Institute, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation), Dr. Manuel Gentiluomo (University of Pisa), and Dr. Ricardo Fujita Alarcón (Center for Genetics and Molecular Biology, University of San Martín de Porres). The Topic Coordinators are Dr. Alexis Germán Murillo Carrasco (ICESP) and Dr. José Luis Buleje Sono (Faculty of Medicine, University of San Martín de Porres).

All details about the topic’s scope can be found on the official website, where guidelines for formatting submissions are also available.

Researcher Who Earned a Dual Ph.D. from the Universidade de São Paulo and the University of Groningen publishes Doctoral Research in Scientific Reports

The study published in Scientific Reports demonstrates that oncolytic virotherapy with Semliki Forest virus replicons modifies melanoma-derived extracellular vesicles, reducing their ability to suppress the immune system. This could pave the way for new combined therapeutic strategies in cancer treatment.
