Gustavo P. Amarante-Mendes

Gustavo P. Amarante-Mendes is a Full Professor and former Vice-Director (2018-2021) of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas at the Universidade de São Paulo (ICB-USP). He has served as Second Secretary (2004-2005), Vice-President (2012-2013), and President (2016-2017) of the Sociedade Brasileira de Imunologia. He was also Vice-President of the Federação das Sociedades de Biologia Experimental (FESBE) (2018-2019 and 2020-2021). Additionally, he served as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Immunology (2011-2015) and Chair of the Internal Biosafety Committee (2009-2013) at ICB-USP. He earned a degree in Biological Sciences with a Medical focus from the Universidade de Santo Amaro (1984), a master’s (1989), Ph.D. (1993), and habilitation (2009) in Immunology from the Universidade de São Paulo. He was a Research Associate at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (San Diego, CA) and a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin and at Genentech, Inc., a Roche Group company. Amarante-Mendes is a member of the editorial board of Cell Death and Disease (Nature Portfolio), Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, and Frontiers in Immunology. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Panel of the Biochemical Journal and has been one of the Keystone Symposia Programming Consultants since 2012. He has received several scientific awards, including the 2nd Oncologia Novartis Award – Saúde Brasil, the Nature Review Cancer Award in 2007 (doctoral student Daniel Diniz de Carvalho), an Honorable Mention in the CAPES Dissertation Award in 2009 (student Ricardo Weinlich), and the CAPES Dissertation Award in 2010 (student Daniel Diniz de Carvalho). Amarante-Mendes has published over 100 scientific papers, collectively cited more than 6,000 times (Google Scholar). His expertise spans Immunology, Cell Biology, and Experimental Oncology, with a focus on topics such as cell death, apoptosis, signaling, immunoregulation, oncogenes, chronic myeloid leukemia, and melanoma.
