On May 26, 2026, a group of high school students visited the São Paulo State Cancer Institute (Icesp) and the Center for Translational Research in Oncology (CTO).
The students had participated in the Particle Physics Masterclass held in late March 2026 and decided to return to deepen their knowledge of cancer treatments and develop a school project on the subject.
The group consisted of students Bernardo Quito Carvalho, Paulo Leão de Moura, Rafael Porto de Freitas Ferrari, and Rian Simão dos Santos, accompanied by Prof. Eloci Peres Rios.
They were welcomed by Dr. Gustavo Albuquerque, who explained how the Cancer Institute operates and discussed the challenges of hospital management within Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS).
Next, Prof. Roger Chammas, coordinator of the CTO, led an interactive lecture for the students, addressing cancer biology and the daily routine of oncology research while answering questions raised during the discussion.
Finally, the group toured the CTO facilities and learned about the imaging equipment used at Icesp, becoming acquainted with some of the technologies they had studied during the Masterclass.
