She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) (1972) and a Ph.D. in Sciences (Biochemistry) from the Institute of Chemistry, USP (1978). She was a researcher at the São Paulo branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research from 1983 to 2011, serving as its director from 2006 to 2010. She has experience in Microbiology, with an emphasis on Virology, Basic Oncology, and Epidemiology, focusing primarily on the following topics: human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, anogenital cancer, head and neck cancer, epidemiological studies on HPV in women and men, immunology of HPV infections, and prophylactic HPV vaccines. She was a professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo from 2011 to 2015. She coordinated the INCT-HPV (National Institute of Science and Technology for Human Papillomavirus Diseases – HPV Institute), a program conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology in partnership with FAPESP and CNPq, aimed at advancing knowledge about HPV infections and related diseases at various levels (2010–2017). Since May 2011, she has been a faculty member in the Department of Radiology and Oncology at the Faculdade de Medicina da USP, earning the title of Associate Professor in 2013. She heads the Innovation in Cancer Laboratory at the Center for Translational Research in Oncology at ICESP. She is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and a Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit. In 2010, she received the SCOPUS Brazil award from Elsevier for her scientific contributions. In 2018, she was awarded an honorable mention in the Peter Muranyi Prize and received the Biology Prize from The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Trieste, Italy, where she was named a Fellow in 2019.
