Luiz Paulo Kowalski

He is a Full Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at FMUSP. He graduated in Medicine from the Universidade Federal do Paraná in 1979. He completed a medical residency in surgical oncology at Fundação Antonio Prudente between 1980 and 1983 and specialized in head and neck surgery at Hospital Heliópolis in 1984. He obtained a master’s degree in Medicine (Otorhinolaryngology) from the Universidade Federal de São Paulo in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Medicine (Otorhinolaryngology) from the same institution in 1989. During his Ph.D. program, he trained as a CNPq fellow at the Head and Neck Service of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He earned the title of Livre-Docente in Oncology at FMUSP in 1996. From 1990 to 2020, he served as Director of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center. Since 2019, he has coordinated the Head and Neck Oncology Reference Center at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center. He is an advisor for graduate programs in Sciences with a focus on Oncology at Fundação Antônio Prudente and Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, having supervised 150 master’s and Ph.D. students. Currently, he serves as Principal Investigator (PI) of the INCT INCITO-INOTE. He previously coordinated the INCT in Oncogenomics and was PI of the CEPID Antonio Prudente Cancer Research Center. He has received 33 research grants to date and is a member of the editorial boards of Surgical Oncology (Oxford), Head & Neck, Acta Otorhinolaryngologica Italica, Oral Oncology, Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia da Cabeça e Pescoço, Revista Brasileira de Cancerologia, and Revista da AMB. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery (2006-2007) and the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) (2014-2015). He has published 640 scientific papers, over 500 of which are indexed in PubMed, with 17,710 citations according to the Web of Science, achieving an H-index of 62 in 2021. He has expertise in Medicine, with emphasis on teaching, research, and clinical practice in Head and Neck Surgery, focusing on areas such as head and neck, cancer, oral cavity, thyroid, larynx, neck dissection, and treatment.
