The University of São Paulo (USP) held, on September 24, another edition of the Colóquios na Reitoria (Colloquia at the Rector’s Office) series, under the theme An Open Conversation about Cancer. The meeting took place at the USP Integration & Memory Space, at the USP Rector’s Office, and was also streamed online.
The guest for this edition was Professor Roger Chammas, faculty member at the Faculdade de Medicina da USP (FMUSP) and coordinator of the C2PO. Over the course of an hour and a half, the audience followed a dialogue on cancer, a disease expected to become the leading cause of death worldwide in the coming decades. He highlighted recent advances in research conducted at USP and the need to achieve Precision Oncology, a more efficient and effective way to diagnose and treat different types of cancer, while also emphasizing the University’s vocation to contribute to improvements in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).
Professor Chammas also answered questions from the audience on topics such as the influence of lifestyle habits like smoking and alcohol consumption, the importance of regular physical activity, the progress of scientific research carried out at the University, and the challenges faced in accessing cancer treatment within the SUS.
During his presentation, the professor also highlighted the role of the C2PO, created in 2023 to integrate oncology research groups at USP and broaden the circulation of scientific knowledge. The meeting reinforced the purpose of the Colóquios na Reitoria series to bring the academic community and the general public closer to the activities developed at the University.
