He is a Full Professor since 2006 and the current Director since 2022 of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Universidade de São Paulo (ICMC-USP), São Carlos Campus, as well as the Vice-Director of the USP Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CIAAM). He is a member of USP’s Budget and Heritage Committee for 2024–2026. He is a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow (Level 1A). He is the Coordinator of the IARA network, Artificial Intelligence Recreating Environments. He is a member of the Computer Science Advisory Committee of CNPq (CA-CC) for 2024–2027. He leads the WG12.2 Working Group on Machine Learning and Data Mining of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). He is a member of the Steering Committee for the Artificial Intelligence for Global Health (AI4GH) Project, IDRC, Canada. He served as Vice-President of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) from 2019 to 2023 and as a member of the CNPq Computer Science Advisory Committee (CA-CC) from 2018 to 2021, serving as coordinator from 2019 to 2020. Between 2013 and 2017, he was a board member of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) of the International Institute of Statistics (ISI). He holds a Bachelor’s degree (1987) and a Master’s degree in Computer Science (1990) from the Federal University of Pernambuco, and a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent (1994). His research focuses on Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Data Science, with applications across various fields. He published numerous articles in these areas, some of which received awards at conferences organized by ACM, IEEE, and SBC. He authored several books, including “Artificial Intelligence: A Machine Learning Approach”, published by GrupoGen in 2011 and winner of the 2012 Jabuti Prize, and “A General Introduction to Data Analytics”, published by Wiley in 2018. He was previously an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph, Canada, and a Visiting Professor and Visiting Researcher at the University of Kent and the Alan Turing Institute, UK. He evaluates projects for national funding agencies such as CAPES, CNPq, FAPERJ, FAPESP, FACEPE, FAPEMIG, FINEP, and Fundação Serrapilheira, as well as international agencies, including CONICYT (Chile), HRZZ (Croatia), GACR (Czech Republic), EPSRC (UK), ISF (Israel), NSERC (Canada), Leverhulme Trust (UK), MIUR (Italy), and SNSF (Switzerland). He is Director of the USP Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry and Vice-Coordinator of the MBA in Data Science at ICMC-USP. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the MCTI-EMBRAPII Innovation Network in Artificial Intelligence, the Science for Education Network (CpE), the Latin America and Caribbean Steering Committee of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA), USP’s University Council, and the Scientific Committee of the Advanced Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). He serves on the Strategy and Partnerships Board of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible, and Transparent AI (ART-AI) at the University of Bath, UK. He is an associate member of the Artificial Intelligence Institute – Te Ipu o te Mahara at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and part of the Governance Group for the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Strategy (EBIA) of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. He is a member of the Technological Council of the Chronos Endowment Fund Management Association and the Governance Committee for Geographical Indications (IG) São Carlos.
